Man I love being in Theatre

Especially the loving program we have.

So it’s my senior year and I’m finally being recognized to do some work… At the worst time ever. I just got a bunch of English homework dumped on me and I’m trying to not drown in Chemistry. Eh shrug.

For our musical auditions I will be in charge of one group and my co-director for the senior production will be running another group. Basically to keep everyone in control and be all nice and sweet to the underclassmen who are nervous about auditioning.

Also, tomorrow I have to design a set so that my tech manager will build it for me (because he loves when I ask him to do stuff last minute). By the way if anyone knows how to use this SketchUp thing from google: I could use some help.

Oh and I just got the CD for the whole musical for How to Succeed and it’s like 32 songs! Wow… way to fill my ipod? haha But isn’t that awesome? And I loved the musical before we decided to do it so really this is like getting the CD for free!

Please don’t forget, if you’re in a production of any sort submit it right here! i’m really looking forward to hearing about other experiences from other people.

Monologues & Vocal Auditions for H2$

Today we received our female monologues for How to Succeed in Business and ummm… I’d say they’re interesting none the less. It is a story about a woman who is explaining to a friend/or daughter that her ferret ran away and that although it appears that she killed the ferret- she didn’t. I’m not sure if she’s being serious or if she really did murder the ferret but either way… yeah…

So we’re singing “Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm” and I must ask for advice here. I’ve never been particularly good at body language in slow songs so I ask: Is there any particular way the body language should be for that song?

I’ve been gone but…

Hello musical theatre kids, I am back to run this gorgeous and amazing blog! Here’s a brief story about where I went and where I’m going:

Well here in my school district we only do musicals in the spring, so since I didn’t get very much activity after i was done, I sort of just let this go until I came back and now here I am. Right now, I am preparing for my school auditions for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying! Now I’ve been crazy about this musical since the revival showed up at the Tony awards last year so I’m tres pumped!

Also what’s happening, I’m a senior in my school right now and things are going by so quickly. My last musical is almost upon me AND I just wrote a musical… yeah I did. I wrote a musical- which I shall update you about as well: the closer and closer we get. And being a senior also means, I’m going to the big place: college. I have 2 college auditions upcoming. One is a musical theatre audition and one is a theatre audition. I’ll tell you more about that when the time comes about but let’s say I’m very nervous about both!

Okay well let’s say I’m super excited to be back and blogging theatre and musical stories. PLEASE submit any stories of your own! Goodness knows with two overlapping shows I will have tons of things to tell my lovely theatre community out there.

p.s. if anyone would like to join me in the endeavor: come alone and let’s do it together!

TMM-Week 4

This last week was a bit bah humbug. Wednesday we were called in for a rehearsal but our choreographer completely blew off the ensemble so we were all just a wandering around the music wing. Me and my friend Kristin practiced in a room with a piano. She’s got mad piano skills so she played the music like whatever. We did every song that the ensemble is a part of. Then after 3 hours of nothing later we were allowed to leave.

Thursday she recorded us and we were all just like whatever. And then we all sat around once again to do… nothing.

Yesterday… we watched the recording. We tried on costumes. Actually the other girls tried on costumes and I found out that I am to big for the “modern” dresses. I fit in costumes last year. Like this dress that I wore for the musical last year:

[wore that as an old lady in My Fair Lady- am I hot or what?]

I’m not too big… thanks for assuming costume director. Yuck. Whatever.

Musical this week was not top notch. Thank goodness for spring break.

TMM-Week 3

Whoops forgot to update this last week… lets see last week what happened…

Well we worked on The Speed Test 3/5 days last week. Our vocals are basically “Matter, Matter, Matter, Matter… etc”. In the music, Trevor Graydon is supposed to “sing as fast as humanly possible” which is pretty awesome because the actor we have can actually do it.

Okay last week was a bit difficult so… yeah. I’m actually going to include this week with it because I don’t have rehearsal until… Monday? [I’ll explain why in a sec]

Monday we sat around for a while and since our choreographer decided to show up without telling the director- they practiced dance instead of learning As Long As I’m Here With You vocals. Which didn’t help today because we had to learn the dance and vocals for that song and out director was missing. We didn’t think she’d be gone so… none of us wrote down EVERYONE’s parts so we were all like… la la la la… uh? haha Today was odd…

so yeah I’ll be missing two days of rehearsal [we don’t have rehearsal tomorrow] because I’m going to the National Concert Band Festival in Indiana! SKIPPEE! Out band is the only band in our state that got invited so we’re all majorly tweakin’. Alright…

OH HI NEW FOLLOWERS! You rock! tell me a story

TMM-Week 2

So let’s see, Monday we learned the routine for Forget About The Boy and although I’m ensemble I feel so relevant to the show more than ever. I mean sure I’m not saying much, but I feel that we as a group really do help make the scene and the songs.

There’s always gotta be someone who’s in the background.

Which is something I’ve learned to stand by with every fiber of my being. I don’t like the saying “There are no small parts, just small actors” because people [like myself] take it out of context. And there are small parts… but in the way they mean.

Anway, Tuesday we did more practice on stage where I sang Forget About The Boy at my ex who sat like an idiot in audience [rule I learned: don’t date your actor friends if they are good actors- they know how to lie]. The choreographer was saying, “Think of the one time a guy screwed you over” andas she said that he walked in and sat in the audience. I was singing “LOWER THAN AN ALLEY CAT DIRTY RAT AND I FLATTER” with some much power that I pretty much overtook the entire stage of heavily breathing girls. When I’m angry I get my gospel girl voice out and man was I angry.

I digress, again… So Friday we had a wonderful rehearsal learning the speed test. It’s a fun dance. I’m excited to practice that Monday.

Everything today is thoroughly modern.

Hi! So this week was my first official week of musical. Today we ran through the first song we learned for the show which is “Thoroughly Modern Millie” [[both the song and show’s namesake]]. I grabbed the middle part because I do love a good challenge when it comes to harmonizing. We had a bit of fun today. We had to practice cardio while singing which involved basically jazzercising in place while singing [[not fun]]. But we had a few laughs and a really good song all around. I’m excited because I’m in a part that involves getting tap shoes! Yay! I’m really excited about the whole thing :)

Do you see that? That right there is a shattered Saint Mary statue.
West Side Story, the Saturday night show. They were singing ‘I Feel Pretty’ and doing their little dance. On Maria’s window sill was this statue and they danced past her. wWell a miscommunication with the crew caused the statue to be closer to the dancers than what was planned- it shattered. Yep, Mary- Jesus’ mother fell to the groun and broke into all those pieces you see.
Break a leg Mary!

This cast was awesome! So many stories so many memories! I was/am the Mama to the lead in the show. which was odd considering I’m black and short and he’s white and tall…. Anyway that’s a show I won’t forget.
